Mucking Around in Boats

17/10/2004: As the official opening of the new church on 14 November looms closer, the working bees are becoming more frequent and more intensive. But the St Johns people are up to the challenge and turn up each Saturday to dig, hammer and plant. Outside the building, a big effort is put into preparing the garden beds and to construct the brick fence and paving at the front of the church. On the inside, new cupboards are being built, walls painted and the pipe organ reassembled. And to keep all those hungry workers fed, Dianna, Judy and their helpers work overtime in the kitchen.

IMGP3367Yes it is hard work.JPG (48919 bytes) Linda, Fran and Lynne are "processing" the gardens by digging the clay with mattocks, then digging in gypsum and topping it off with compost. Then a layer of old newspapers is held down by a thick layer of mulch, before the trees and shrubs are planted.

There were no age limits imposed on workers attempting to turn beds of solid clay into gardens.
