Mucking Around in Boats

16 August 2004: Stylish glass and aluminium doors complete the structure to lock-up stage.

02 August 2004: Almost at lock-up stage, attention turns to the interior.

01 July 2004: Glass bricks are being laid at the front of the church.

13 June 2004: Brick walls, aluminium windows, Colour Bond roof - it's all happening. Our new church is rapidly taking shape.

21 May 2004: Always prepared to go the extra mile to get that exclusive shot, Nelly rides the builder's cherry-picker to the top of the new roof structure to bring you the latest construction photos.

08 May 2004: The builders have wasted no time in erecting the steel girders to form the framework of our new church.

01 May 2004: Having just got over the excitement of seeing the concrete slab laid, the weekend of 1-2 May sees the arrival of the pre-fabricated structural steel which will soon be erected to form walls and roof.

Coloured glass bricks add an interesting feature to the western wall. IMGP3202coloured glass bricks.JPG (42180 bytes)

IMGP2968A spot for the organ pipes.JPG (41482 bytes) Ultimate location of our organ pipes.
Interior view of the semi-circular wall of the glass brick organ pit. IMGP2967looking out through glass wall.JPG (46897 bytes)

The wall of glass bricks now also features a cross.

IMGP2927top section with cross.JPG (46797 bytes) Window at the front of the "loft" now features a cross.
IMGP2904A look at the back section and roof.JPG (52012 bytes) The roof nears completion as a worker abseils down from the north-facing upper windows which will flood the worship area with filtered sunlight.

A builder lays a semi-circle of glass bricks around the new position for our old pipe organ console.

Close up of the new roof at the eastern side.

IMGP2763Roof panels on the back of the church.JPG (68379 bytes)
IMGP2761Roof panels are up on the front of the church.JPG (69352 bytes) The pale green Colour Bond roof is starting to go up.
IMGP2751Base of the retention tank.JPG (84371 bytes) Laying the concrete base of the retention tank. (This tank looks as big as an Olympic swimming pool! If it ever overflows, start building your ark.)

The eastern wall now features new aluminium sliding windows and the roof is about to be fitted with pink insulation bats.

IMGP2749Windows are in.JPG (61723 bytes)

The Rectory now boasts a new chimney, replacing the one that was accidentally amputated by a rogue excavator about 9 months ago.

IMGP2742The chimney is back in time for the cold weather.JPG (106100 bytes)
IMGP2737Wall finished now waiting for the windows.JPG (82628 bytes) A view of the eastern wall where aluminium windows will soon be installed above the office area.
IMGP2734Brickwall in the front with holes for glass bricks.JPG (73589 bytes) The front (western) wall, showing the semi-circular sanctuary which will be constructed from glass bricks.

This little digger is excavating a large hole for the underground drainage retention tank.

Thankfully, the new brickwork will eventually conceal the insulation material, which is a shocking pink colour.

IMGP2726Bricklaying at the front of the church.JPG (97405 bytes)
IMGP2724New windows for the kitchen with reflection of the rectory fence.JPG (64236 bytes) A very large power distribution board sits beside the new kitchen windows, which are so clean that they reflect an image of the new Rectory fence.
IMGP2723The new sliding doors at the back.JPG (59304 bytes) New sliding doors installed at the rear of the existing church hall.
Some very neat brickwork on the outer walls. (Note the builder's safety harness on top of the wall - Work Cover will be pleased!) IMGP2717Outside brick walls are going up.JPG (57262 bytes)

Preparing for the installation of aluminium sliding doors.

IMGP2714All fenced in.JPG (93297 bytes) Fence on the northern boundary.
IMGP2676Bricks and frame.JPG (53943 bytes) A "lift" of new bricks stands in front of the steel structure, the walls of which it will soon form a part.

The first new brickwork has begun around the new structure.

Building site foreman Kevin can't escape the paperwork in his office. He's being helped by his son, Warren, who is also leading hand on site. (The crutches are for Warren who injured his knee on the St Johns site. We wish him a speedy recovery.)

IMGP2641See the great shape.JPG (77142 bytes) Silhouetted against the morning sky, the new church roofline looks very modern.
IMGP2613A look from the top down.JPG (89852 bytes) Nelly took a ride in the cherry-picker to the top of the roof to get this shot from the top looking down.

Down at ground level there's always plenty of cleaning up to do, and the boys make sure that the building site is kept free of unwanted obstacles.

IMGP2593Digging up the back part.JPG (100536 bytes)

The stunning lines of the new structure are quickly becoming evident.

IMGP2592Frame looking impressive.JPG (74164 bytes)
IMGP2590SMore frame work going up.JPG (76985 bytes) Steel roof supports have been added to the girders to give the first clues to the final shape of the structure.
IMGP2584The fence between church and rectory.JPG (88002 bytes) This section of fence is between the church and the Rectory.

Whilst the church framework was going up, work on the boundary fence was also in full swing.

IMGP2580The start of the fence.JPG (114828 bytes)
IMGP2567Big frame with small men.JPG (78829 bytes) Some of the builders are dwarfed by the structure.
IMGP2563Looking up.JPG (78779 bytes) Some of the taller verticals.
IMGP2561Guiding into place.JPG (80262 bytes) A large steel post is erected by the crane and guided into place by one of the builders.

Construction well under way

IMGP2557More frame work.JPG (84970 bytes)
IMGP2555frame work going up.JPG (83849 bytes) Silhouetted against an autumn sky, the initial steel framework looks very impressive.
IMGP2550John digging for gold.JPG (50402 bytes) John the builder (Bob's brother) digs a hole adjacent to the entrance to the 1968 building. Mystery surrounds the purpose of the hole, but we're sure there is a good reason for it.

Structural steel lying on top of the floor slab, waiting to be erected in a few day's time.

IMGP2521Steel beams and more beams.JPG (90829 bytes)

A steel girder is lowered onto the slab, which was laid just one week before. (Note the relative size of the girder compared with the building worker, lower left).

IMGP2500Steel being lowered into place.JPG (86794 bytes)
IMGP2499Steel hoisted through the air.JPG (46665 bytes) A large steel member is hoisted over the roof of the 1968 church and onto the new church construction site.

A large crane arrives to convey the steel girders from the truck to the building site. (Yes, that does look like the crane driver, but it's really our ace photographer, Nelly).

IMGP2490From truck to crane.JPG (91265 bytes)

The first load of pre-fabricated structural steel arrives on-site.
